In effect, the commercial speech has a limited measure of protection in comparison to noncommercial speech (Delta and Matsuura). The commercial clause, which is a definite article in the constitution of the US, confers the Congress with the power to regulate commercial activities with foreign countries, between several states, and with the Indian Tribes (The Commercial Clause). The main advantage of the commercial clause was its nature in ensuring that Congress regulated trade and commerce, which was not the case prior

Difficulties in cross cultural communication Case Study

Difficulties in cross cultural communication - effort Study Example2001). As such, this paper is mainly concerned with analysing a case study that is related to difficulties experienced in a situation that deals with cross cultural communication. The paper starts by analysing the case and this will be followed by enigma identification and presentation. The main part of the paper will analyse the measures that can be implemented in order to deal with the problem in an amicable way that is not likely to create more problems. A summary of the major points discussed will be drawn at the end of the paper. Case analysis Leary is the manager of a thriving financial companionship, Merrill Lynch, and she uses people oriented strategies to manage the caller-up. She prefers to engage the employees in their work so as to try to set the best out of them. She alike closely monitors the performance of the employees so as to be in a position to effectively manage them so that the goals of the memorial tablet can be achieved. There are about 45 financial consultants who carry out the work in the company. Of notable concern is the fact that the company has an employee, Ted Chung whose primary origin is Taiwan. Chung is specifically meant to target Taiwanese people since this segment is comprised of affluent people who can bring meaningful business to the company. Indeed, Chung brought a whop account worth $6 million, one of the highest in the history of the company. Chung states that he has to use the Taiwanese tradition in order to attract these targeted people and there is no other financial consultant with the exquisite skills to perform this particular task. Problem identification For quite some time, Leary has noticed certain behaviour in Chung which she thinks is a cause for concern. For instance, Chung is a self centred person and he does not like to interact with others. He does not want to share his things with others and he is to a fault short tempered. All th ese factors worry Leary. The other problem is that Chung has requested a hugger-mugger office but regardless of the fact that he brought one of the largest accounts to the company and he is performing well, he is still too junior to get a private office. Of the 45 financial consultants, only eight have private offices. Therefore, the problem in this case is twofold if Leary gives in and try to appease Chung, this is likely to attract the wrath of other senior financial consultants who can also demand the same favour. This will certainly impact on the morale of other employees as well as their performance. It can also be seen that the problem is culture based. By virtue of being Taiwanese, Chung thinks that he deserves special treatment since he is dealing with a niche group of customers that has potential to bring a lot of business to the company. As such, a holistic approach ought to be taken when dealing with this case since it can negatively affect the whole fundamental law if care is not taken. Measures that can be taken to resolve the problem identified According to Korac-Kakabadse et al (2001), the difficulties that arise in cross-cultural face-to-face encounters whitethorn be addressed with a better understanding of communication styles utilised by different cultures. In this case, it is imperative for Leary to understand the culture of Chung before winning a decisive step. People who come from different cultural backgrounds have different communication skills and this fact impacts on the way they interact with others. It can be noted that Chung is a sort of withdrawn person but this may not be his fault as may be thought by other people within the company. A closer reading of the case study shows that

HIV - Essay Exampleal., 2005). That notwithstanding, the assertion that HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders afflicts even those HIV patients whose immunologic and virological status is high is not entirely true. The effects of these disorders and all other concomitant consequences differ among patients based on their immunity (Sanmarti et. al., 2014).It is optimistic for the expression to state that the adverse health effects of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders can still stand by in the study of HIV-related brain injury. Lewis et. al. (2009) agrees with this claim asserting that neuropsychological tests have not been able to study all brain injuries. There is a need for standardization and homogenization of neurocognitive tests and the exposition of this need is a unique contribution of this name (Eden et. al., 2010). Finally, the suggestion that there is a need to determine the individual contribution of individual comorbidities to the development of HIV-associated ne urocognitive disorders is insightful (Letendre et. al., 2004). The knowledge of the contribution of individual comorbidities can help design treatments that can help prevent escalation into these disorders.Eden A., Fuchs, D., Hagberg, L., Nilsson, S., Spudich, S., Svennerholm, B., Price, R.W. & Gissln, M. International strategic human resource management Essay

International strategic human resource management - establish ExampleThe Columbian Martin Barbero calls this movement as abstract inclusion and concrete exclusion. He emphsized that the many once sleepy towns have awaken to be the revolutionary industrial towns and cities of the nineteenth century where there was more class segregation. The community separation was made more complex by the more complex figure conditions in our new industrial capitalism. Thus, the social authority was being deminished due to the commercial dismemberment of the cohesiveness of the national tillage.( Goodall,1995)We can now travel, by jetplane, from on corner of the United Kingdom to the farthest community in the European uniting. The European Union has given the citizens of one European Union country the loose pass to visit any other European Union nation without a VISA. Airplanes and speedy trains have made travel from one European Union Country to Another very fast. A very good example is the United Kingdom which is composed of 3 countries. ... The national culture of one country is now in danger of being taken over or being mixed with the cultural of other countries.Storey quotes Every snip that we snatch up a vehement opinion in ignorance and passion, every time that we long to crush an advesary by sheer violence, every time that we are envious, every time that we are brutal, every time that we adore mere power of success, every time that we add our voice to swell a blind clamor against close to unpopular (Raymond, 1990)personage, every time that we trample savagely on the fallen we have found in our own bosom the eternal spirit of the populace. (107 my italics) This quote by John Storey emphasizes that the new national culture is now a common culture (Inge,1989) of violence, envy, success, jealousy and success.Storey also states that national culture(David & Wodak,1999) has been marked by the to a higher place culture of cohesiveness under a state of authoritariani sm and principles of hierarchy.Storey quoted Dwight Macdonald saying in the article A theory of Mass Culture Mass culture (Wierzbicka, 1992)is imposed from above. History Document Analysis on ETA and the Basque Country Essay

History Document Analysis on ETA and the Basque Country - Essay Example498). In its campaigns thus far, the ETA has committed over 900 killings and dozens of kidnappings. While the ETA did declare a unilateral cease-fire on March 22, 2006, on September 23, 2006, the organization announced that it would regain hostilities until the achievement of Basque independence (ETA).To understand the sentiments at work in all three of these documents particularly the harsh dichotomies of the Arana piece it is good to have an understanding of the kinetics at work within the ETA. To people exposeside of the Basque region, and, in particular, outside of Spain, the mission of the ETA sounds just like one of many small revolutionary groups, provoke for its own few square miles of self-determination, if only to avoid the larger taxing entities in the country around it (Funes, p. 499). Each of these little splinter groups has its own pronunciamento that spouts idealistic words and phrases, its own shrill anthem that sounds to the modern person listening from abroad much like, quite frankly, the declarations that leapt from the American colonies to the government of Great Britain in the later days of the eighteenth century. The modern chapter of the Basque story begins during the reign of Francisco Franco, and his attempts to drive the Basque nation off the very face of the planet. Because there had been Basque sympathizers with the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War, Franco decided to eliminate any signs of Basque culture from the public consciousness. The Basque flag could not be displayed Basque holidays could not be publicly celebrated program line the Basque language, or even speaking it in public, were forbidden baptizing children who did not have Spanish surnames was proscribed (Sullivan, p. 88). This crackdown against non-Spanish cultures was not carried out throughout the country, however. Fine and Coarse Aggregates in Concrete Gradation Essay

Fine and Coarse Aggregates in Concrete Gradation - Essay ExampleAny aggregate that should be utilise for any turn must be based on certain quality information. Such information can be obtained after experimental tests have been done on the sample and measured to ascertain its standards. Basically, ASTM C33 is one of the accords for concrete specification for both bonny and coarse aggregates (Ward, 2004).From the graphs, the fineness modulus can be obtained for both coarse and fine aggregates. Normally, the entire mass of the material should correspond with the original mass after sieving and should not be greater than 0.3%.If the results is greater than that value, then it should not be used because it will have exceeded the acceptance level (Ward, 2004).According to ASTM C 33, an aggregate which can fail to meet the sieve analysis provisions might be accepted, that is if it validates that the concrete prepared with such fine aggregate will have crucial properties andshould comply specific requirements. On the other hand, when a specified order is chosen, close control should be done in order to minimise disparity. If a wider deviation is used in coarse aggregate ensued on a certain project, it is recommended to adjust the mix proportion in order to obtain a workable and effective concrete (Ward, 2004).Finally, the ASTM C 33 requires that, for any on-going consignments from any source, the fineness modulus of a fine aggregate should not be more than 0.20. Furthermore, if the fineness modulus is very much different from that used in alternative of proportions, then adjustments should be made in ratios of fine and coarse aggregates. Maintenance of uniformity in production of aggregates is more economical and cheap than adjustment of variations in grading. It can be deduced that the fineness modules depends on the coarser or softness of the material. The coarser the aggregate the higher the fineness modulus, similarly the finer the

Research - Essay ExampleThis article discusses whether the drinking age of intoxicant in the US should be lowered from 21 to 18 years. Alcohol is made when fruits, grains or vegetables are fermented. Alcohol is a known depressant and at the age of 18 years, it slows the functioning of the central nervous system. A t 18 years, alcohol consumed actually blocks some of the messages trying to get to the brain. This in turn changes an individuals perceptions, sentiments, movement, hallucination and hearing (Cima 2). United States recognizes 18 as the official enceinte age. Lowering the recommended drinking age from 21 to 18 years would allow more people especially those between the ages of 18 to 20 years to take alcohol in a safer manner in regulated environments without supervision. When the government prohibits this age group from drinking in earthly concern places such as restaurants, bars, and other licensed locations, they will drink in unrestricted places such as fraternity houses or house parties, places where they may be exposed to binge drinking and other unsafe behaviors. Most road accidents occur during the first few years of legal drinking regardless of the drinking age. Majority of the victims had blood alcohol concentrations of more than 0.08, comprising of more than 35%. In order to offset these traffic accident fraternities by 21%, the legal age for drinking alcohol should be lowered from the ages of 21 to 18years. Comparative research shows that countries with the recommended drinking age of 18 years pose lower number of traffic accidents caused by drunken driving (The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University 1). If the recommended alcohol drinking age were lowered from 21 to 18 years, it would make consumption of alcohol less of a taboo for grownups that are newly joining college and the workforce. Value and Meaning - Essay ExampleNozick also states that as human beings, we are al managements looking for a way to find unity and value and to make ourselves and our lives valuable. He says that we also want our lives and ourselves to have this organic unity (165). He says that the diversity comes to us from us lacking to do a myriad of things with our lives and to take in numerous different ideas and activities. This means that some of us will have meaning from things that are immanent to our selves (e.g. deep meaning within us) while others will see value and meaning in those things that are outside ourselves.Value can have many meanings. Nozick suggests that value is something intrinsic in an individual or in a thing. Value is within someones own boundaries while meaning is something that is connected beyond the unique(predicate) boundaries that people have within their lives (166). He suggests that meaning is restrain by the way that people think of it. People are concerne d that meaning has limits and wherefore it does. This translates to people thinking that their lives are limited. In order to actually find true meaning for someones life they must understand that there are no limits and that they can do whatever they want in order for their life to have the meaning that they seek (166). However, meaning can also be coordinated into value if we connect with things that we also feel are important to us. He says that we also see limitations because we know that we will ultimately die and this will be the ending of us. Even the universe will eventually change its form by dying in some sort of massive heat, which ultimately brings its destruction. In my opinion, it is difficult to get past the limitations that we set in our lives because of this believe that things must be limited. A lot of self-help books and other materials state that we are not limited and we have only to understand this so that we can live a life of abundance and prosperity the ch allenge is that most people do not believe

The Taylor report deemed that all top division clubs must have all seater stadiums, with restrictions placed on those without.Similar guidelines were introduce d and applied with lower league clubs, where although all-seater stadiums were not compulsory, the safety of each stadium must pass stringent checks. There have been cases especially highlighted in the conference league where upon a club has been promoted, only to be demoted back to the same league immediately because their ground or stadium did not encounter safety regulations. Ethnic Literature Essay Example for Free

Ethnic Literature EssayThe term ethnic when in conjunction with the word writings in the academic discourse community of students, often brings out mixed feelings of excitement and dread. On the one hand, students understand that they will be acquiring a phonation from the canonical American literature which can equal boring in their eyes on the other hand, students interpret the term ethnic literature to mean distinctive which can equal confusing or ambiguous and perhaps at times not relatable because it is outside their scope of experiences. Perhaps before start into why it matters, the term ethnic literature should be defined first and because I am still learning how to interpret this term myself, I searched for a suitable one I could agree with. I found one in an article entitled Assessing Teachers Knowledge of Multi-Ethnic Literature, and the article actually used another source themselves to come up with a workable, laymans definition. Ethnic literature as defined b y D. E.Norton (as the articles source) is, Literature well-nigh racial or ethnic minority groups that ar culturally and socially different from the white Anglo-Saxon majority in the get together States, whose largely middle-class values and customs are well-nigh represented in American literature (qtd. in Hager Thompson 22). I think this definition kit and boodle well to define what ethnic literature is on a surface level, but the more I dig in, I feel that this idea goes ofttimes deeper. I asked myself, who can write about ethnic literature? Can anyone just pick up a pen so to speak and secernate a story about a young Nipponese boy, or a Latino family? Can an African-American writer write about Hispanic or Chinese people and claim it is ethnic literature? And the answer to myself is no. Why? Because unless that African-American has been submersed in the Hispanic or Japanese culture from the time of childhood, how are they going to capture the very essence of being, thinking , and living daylight-to-day in that culture? And even if that African-American had, they would still most likely have a different perspective from the average Hispanic or Chinese person because of being different themselves (i. e black) and perhaps are treated different by the community at large which corrupts the normal cultural thinking. At this deeper level I am trying to get at, I find John M. Reillys article Criticism of Ethnic Literature Seeing the Whole Story helpful in acquiring this.He states that, the program line of ethnicity in literature can be made only through a procedure by which the writer resolves formal problems what moves from recognition of identity to being of a strategy for handling reality still is not literature until the individual author sustains her or his ethnic identity through a sequence of formal choices (4). I am interpreting this to mean that as a reader of this literature, I should see and feel throughout the story (perhaps subtlety) that in approximately way, the characters mindset (and perhaps actions) in the story differ from my own specifically because of the culture they have grown up in in, which has shaped that characters thinking. There are thoughts and feelings ideas, I dont understand without further explanation from the author, which is sometimes provided, and sometimes not. An example of this is in Brando Skyhorses novel The Madonnas of bounce Park, I find myself wondering what the moment of the jacaranda trees mentioned in different wears of the book. Looking up what they are, it becomes apparent to me as jacaranda trees are indispensable to Central America roots back to their homeland. The blossoms from the trees fall and are scattered everywhere. Felicia in chapter 2 states that theres no way getting away from them (25).Basically meaning, you cannot escape who you are and where you come from. I would not have unsounded this had I not explored the history of that tree to uncover the significance in t he book. Another example is in Seventeen Syllables in the story Seventeen Syllables. The story about a Japanese family is easy to read, but is firmly to connect with as I dont share the same philosophies about a womans place in the Japanese culture. A specific instance in the story was when Mrs. Hayashi, Rosies mother received her the first place prize for her stellar Haiku. When the man from the newspaper presented her with a package, Mrs. Hayashi, stating she knew it was unorthodox, asked if she ability open it because she was very curious. (Yamamoto 17). At this point, I am thinking to myself, I dont get it why wouldnt she open it? but upon reflection, I considered the patriarchal society that is dominant in this culture, and perhaps it is the wifes obligation to consult or have the husband open the gift, even if it is not specifically for him. Yet another example is in Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz.To come specifically to the point, I do not understand this idea of why it is unders tood that Dominican men are supposed to be these manly men that women flock to and fall on their knees for. That the sexual appetite along with innate sand of charisma from Dominican men is expected, and when its lacking, it doesnt go unnoticed. Anywhere else his triple-zero batting average with the ladies might have passed without comment, but this is a Dominican pull the leg of were talking about, in a Dominican family dude was supposed to have Atomic Level G, was supposed to be pulling in the bitches with two hands (24).Why is this idea so indoctrinated in this culture according to the book? This is perhaps something I will never understand, except that it is a part of their culture. All of these examples are all good and well, but the important question is why is ethnic literature important? What can be gained from reading it? From a most basic viewpoint, it is a highly effective vehicle for helping people understand themselves and the world around them.Thompson and Hager in their article state that, multi-ethnic literature mirrors and validates the experiences for minority groups and juxtaposes the familiar with the less familiar for mainstream children (22). In other words, through reading ethnic literature, readers can find ways to connect with others around them that are different. The article also states that when readers are exposed to divergent thoughts, language patterns, value systems, and different ways of living, that it can open up awareness about others and create compassion and understanding towards them that might not have happened without the literary exposure (23).To sum it all up, I will never argue against the focusing of ethnic literature in the school setting. In fact, I think teaching it should begin right from the beginning in kindergarten, and perhaps one day we wont need the designated term ethnic literature perhaps one day it can just be American Literature and part of the regular American canon of literature. The Marketing Concept EssayThe trade concept consists of three basic elements.1.Customer Orientation2.Company Commitment3.Company GoalsThe first concept that I will circumscribe and explain is customer orientation. Customer orientation is producing items that people want, and selling the effectively. In order to perform this task will need to base your decision-making on customers unavoidably and wants. So, instead of trying to market what is easiest to make, you must find out much more about what the consumer is willing to buy. In different words, you must apply your creativeness more intelligently to people and their needs, rather that to products.Next is company commitment. Company commitment is when the business coordinates all of its marketing activities with each other and with all other business functions, such as accounting, production, management, and administration. This should enable the organization to improve its effectiveness in providing customer satisfaction .When a company commits itself to consumer satisfaction and uses it resources for that purpose, the third element of the marketing concept, achievement of goals, should happen. Companies continue to exist by achieving their long-term goals not by making quick sales, offerings, or changes that do not satisfy customer needs.

The issues in conformity

The bring outs in accordanceTheoryConformity to base is another issue depicted on the movie to be researched. found on Farlex, 2010, conformity means take action base on certain accepted usual standard. If we talk in context of group, so this conformity to group can be described as the action that accepted in a group as a foundation of an agreement. This is a need for each spate to be in custom as a part of in-group throng, rather than becomes out-group citizenry in a certain group, gang, or organization that leads to a sign that that person is similar to people within that group which follow the consistency of the rules, notwithstanding of threatening the rules it selves (Sique, 2010).Basically amply conformity to group means that when one and only(a) persons will is defeated by others will in deciding something because they dont want to act contradictory his/her groups will that may result in unsafe and noble pressure company.Actually this conformity to group is the result of some cultural dimensions created by Dutch sociologist Geert Hofstede and Fons Trompenaar. Based on doch and luthans, 2006, hofstede examined four cultural dimensions, while on the other hand Trompenaar developed seven dimensions. Not all dimensions can be cogitate as the result of conformity to group, however there are some factors that have strong bond with conformity that werent come from those dimensions.Application of TheoryBased on hofstede, dimension in power distance, uncertainty avoidance, and collectivism lead to high conformity, while particularism, communitarianism, neutral, and attribution from Trompenaar may give participation as well. magnate distance describe when a pukka in a group is accepted to have the greatest power in that group, therefore that person moldiness be obeyed (Viaweb, 2010). In high conformity, high power distance is exists based on people who act as superior or made superior by others because of their ability or even race. They must be followed otherwise we can be treated as outsider in our group. High conformity may caused by situation in which its member feel uncomfortable in unusual or different circumstances (Itim International, 2009). People with this high take of uncertainty avoidance will be passive and tend to follow the rules, therefore they dont want to express their emotion to the group which makes them comfort with their group choice. fabianism as opposite of individualism makes people tend to loyal with their group and share their value and belief that may lead to community interest. In high conformity, people may aroma after their group closing and be likely to forgone their own will. The problem is occurred when it comes to a question, if everyone goes after others will, so whose willingness that must be complied with? The answer might be related nearly with power distance, in which the superior is the ruler.High conformity to group is a result of particularism in which the community of the gro up may help their friends using any other shipway, including breaking rules as long as they are in one community. Based on doh and luthans, 2006, communitarianism refers to people that look upon themselves as a part of group not individual with own will that becomes requirement oh high conformity to group. high conformity tend to have neutral culture in which peoples emotion are not doing in an open or ordinary ways, thence people keep silent even the decision is contradictive with their will. Later if we see conformity characteristic, we can see that people in that group tend to be ascription culture that means the people who become the leader is the one that mature either in age, or gender, not based on their ability or knowledge. So even someone who has better thought process, but if the older one said something worse, people tend to choose the older one.Another issue that closely related with conformity to group is because of ethnocentrism. Its the belief that ones own way of doing something is superior to others (Doh and Luthans, 2006). This meaning can be applied to all aspect, such as one culture belief that their culture is highest among others. And in other words we can say it is when people everything based on their own way, without accepting that other people might have their own perspective.People could have high conformity in their group if they think that people on their group is the best, which is characteristic of ethnocentrism, and look other as low level group. This will lead to international conflict in society life. Even though it may cause external conflicts, it creates internal unity. It also makes individuals feel more certain about their beliefs. Through providing individuals with a ace of belonging to a particular community, ethnocentrism enables social order. Societies need that diverseness of solidarity and order so as to continue (Charon, 2007).Implication to businessThe issues in conformity to group and ethnocentrism itself m ay have implication to managing across cultures either in domestic or international organization. Most likely the negative effects will occurs based on those cultural issues.Ethnocentrism may result a blue effect where it goes into business or organization world. Firstly it may result in the bad decision when it comes to a company that did offshore and use family unit soil directors. managers from home country with high ethnocentrism may think that the best business decision is the one like in home country as they might think that business decision in host country is not the best one. This may result in the failing in companys business. if we go to personal level, we will see more issues that can be raised. Based on the high ethnocentrism level, a person with high level of managerial may makes decision with any issues, such as they might think that their race is higher than local people in the workplace, so that the managers might support the employee with equivalent race or na tionality that similar with him/her. That kind of managers will hear more and approved employees idea that come from similar background with the manager, rather than any idea from local employee, even that idea is greater. Even in case where a manager must fire the employee, the manager will let off employee based on their certain background. In the case of conformity any subordinate may find any difficulties in give their brilliant idea, or breathing in to their superior. Most likely they are afraid that if they dont agree with their superior decision or idea, they will be marked as an opposition party, which later on resulting in their future career. Even the subordinate mindsets that think their superior is the best person with all excellent business approach. Moreover Pech (2001) reach a decision that high level of conformity in organization may resulting in disadvantage effects such as avoidance of individualism, reduce individual sense of creativity, discovery, and ownership. And final disadvantages to organization may occurred because of low morale and incompetency in taking action to competitor or external pressures through low susceptibility in low cost and product differentiation.RecommendationIn order to prevent the negative effect of conformity and ethnocentrism to group, there are some ways to be applied. First of all, the main effort that must be applied is communication and training. Such in case of off shoring company, the managers from home country must get any training before start to become the leader in the host country. They must know how to interact with local employee in their behavior, including socialization, appraising, and cultural rules. Communication is important factor that must be applied in certain issues that both faced by managers and employees in order to disperse with win-win solution. Then the next thing to do is managers should change their own habits and have ability in understanding others by learn to see different re ception to such business approach that may be seen from other people. Groupthink can also be used rather than individual will of a manager by asking opinion from their subordinates and thinking out of the box. This groupthink may change both the managers and employees behavior and positively will reach good results (Helium, Inc, 2010). However in a journal by manz and neck (1995) they state that groupthink only focus on the negative effect in team decision making and thus there is a tendency within the member of group to fail in discussing and analyze any alternative course of action. Therefore they offer immature ways of thinking by using Team think that will produce effective synergies thinking in belief and assumption that improve decision making and the outcome of performance.Charon, J.M. A Failure To Communicate

A Failure To CommunicateWhat we have here is a affliction to communicate. This known quote from the 1967 film, Cool Hand Luke, characterizes the plight of the characters in the short stories by Jhumpa Lahiri. A Temporary Matter, When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine, and Interpreter of Maladies, three stories in Lahiris book Interpreter of Maladies, confront how a failure to communicate dooms the alliances in the midst of the characters in each story. Not every breakdown in intercourse is for the same reason, exactly it is usually command for the partners interests. This failure of the relationships is portrayed in these stories as due to a failure of one or both of the partners of the relationship to realize the needs and desires of the otherwise. Lahiri portrays her characters as absent to the other partners feelings or self-directed, only focusing on their own situation. In Lahiris stories she allows us walk in the shoes of another person where she points step to the fore the manifest flaws that the protagonists seem to miss. The story, A Temporary Matter, begins with a notice that for five day electricity would be cut off for an hour in the neighborhood of Shukumar and Shoba, a young Indian couple. After the death of their baby, who died at birth, the both are breathing out through printings. They constantly avoid each other, only meeting up to have a silent dinner party or have an awkward check-up on the other. The love in their relationship had become none-existent and the images of when they did love each other haunt Shukumar. Before the night of the freshman blackout Shukumar prepared dinner for Shoba, hoping to rekindle something between them. They had dinner by bay liftowdle-light in silence, until Shoba brought up a runty game where they had to tell each other something they had never told the other before. They did this every night until the first night after the blackouts. Shukumar had set up the dinner fudge as if the blackouts were a ll the same happening, but Shoba turned on the lights and brought up a serious subject. She revealed to Shukumar that she was preparing for a life without him. Shukumar then retorted with something that was equally as hurtful. Lahiri ends the story with the dickens sitting at the table weeping.Lahiri uses her first story to illustrate to the reader how the neglect of one or both people in the relationship can cause it to fail the inability to meet someones needs or make sacrifices in a relationship ultimately dooms it. By the time of the nightly male monarch outages, they had become experts at avoiding each other, neither Shukumar nor Shoba was willing to face the other for fear of having to deal with the tragic loss of their baby (4). In their mutual depression they are both unwilled to ease themselves and unable to buoy up the stress they are living under, much less helping each other. They refused to let go of this tragedy, The film in his camera still contained pictures of Shoba, in the yard, when she was pregnant (15). The pictures represent a happier, idealized time in their relationship, and by keeping the pictures in his camera it shows that he is unwilling let go of this image and face the reality of the present. He cannot accept that their relationship is failing and neither can Shoba. They are unwilling and unable to move forward, dragged back into depression by the constant reminders of the death of their baby. The more they could not help themselves move on, the more they could not help the partner. Shukumar is stuck in a malaise and Shoba does everything to distract herself. They did not have the ability or the willpower to help themselves or each other therefore they were stuck in a dying relationship. To illustrate the fact that Shukumar and Shoba are too busy wallowing in their self-centered misery Lahiri snuck in the image of the dying plant in desiccated up dirt in the midst of all this misery, Even though the plant was inches away from the tap, the soil was so dry he had to water it first before the candle would stand straight (10). The plant and soil are a metaphor for the relationship. His relationship had life and many chances, but he overlook those chances. He was unwilling to water the plant, just like he unwilling to help his relationship. Even at the end, the plant is dead but he is still using the soil. He does not even watering the plant for the plants sake, but using it for his own needs just like when they have these intimate moments during the blackouts, he is not to keep his marriage alive, he is doing it to get his doubts and secrets off his chest, It happened over fifteen years ago. He felt relief now, having told her (17). These confessions were not meant to help determine the relationship but were used instead to relieve their conscience and ultimately ended up hurting each other, Our baby was a boy he promised himself that day (the day the baby was born) he would never tell Shoba, because he s till loved her then (22). He k refreshful this would hurt Shoba, but now he did it for personal gain and vengeance. Their self-centered attitude toward their relationship ultimately drove them apart. In the short story When Mr. Pirzada Came to Dine, the title character, Mr. Pirzada, a botanist from Dacca, India, leaves his married woman and vi daughters behind to study plant life in New England. Ten year old Lilia and her parents, an Indian family, invite Mr. Pirzada to come over to have dinner with them. While in the U.S. a war broke out in India and Dacca was hit. Mr. Pirzada would come every night to the house of Lilia and eat dinner with them. all toldness of those nights in October, Lilia began to accept his constant visits, and even carved a pumpkin with him. On Halloween night Lilia was about to venture out trick-or-treating for her first time whole until Mr. Pirzada got worried and asked if he should go. Fearing losing her independence she told him not to worry, he sulked back surprised into the doorway. They do not talk again, and the family does not hear from him for months until one day they welcome a letter from Mr. Pirzada telling them that he found his family and all were safe. When Mr. Pirzada finds that the communication between him and his family is flawed, he slowly opens channels with Lilias family. Mr. Pirzadas need for communication was shown Each workweek when Mr. Pirzada wrote a letter to his wife, and sent comic books for his seven daughters (24). However this proves to be an unsatisfying way of communication because it is one way communication therefore he looks toward Lilia and her family to fill the void of the lost relationship with his daughters and his family. As Mr. Pirzada begins to go to dinners, he starts to treat Lilia more and more like his daughter. The turning point in their relationship is the carving of the pumpkin, Yes, lets carve it, For the first time we all gathered around the dining table (35). Before the carvin g of the pumpkin the height of the interaction between Mr. Pirzada and Lilia was when he gave her candy each night. They realized that they had to give up a little bit of comfort for him. He accepted the family because they took him in during his time of need. The whole family and Mr. Pirzada gathering around that table represented that Mr. Pirzada was part of the family. Through Mr. Pirzadas interactions, Lahiri illustrates that when one loses a line of communication, they look for it somewhere else.A relationship is doomed to failure if one of the sides of the relationship neglects the needs of the other side. On Halloween night, fearful of losing her independence, Lilia chooses to spend the night with her friend instead of spending it with Mr. Pirzada (something typical for the American culture, but backbreaking for Mr. Pirzada to understand), and tells him, Dont worry (38). Disregarding Mr. Pirzadas fear that hell lose another daughter, Lilia neglects his needs and his pains. T his act shows that she lacks the understanding that in order to help Mr. Pirzada she needs to sacrifice some things in order to keep her relationship with him alive. The communication between the two is broken down due to her obliviousness to the causes of this self-centered act. As such, their relationship fails For a farsighted time we did not hear from him. Our evenings went on as usual, with dinners in front of the news (41). Through her failure in communication, their relationship disintegrated. Throughout the days with Lilias family, Mr. Pirzadas ties with them deepen, but when Lilia becomes oblivious to his needs, the relationship fails. In Lahiris third story Interpreter of Maladies, Mr. Kapasi is a working man in India with two jobs, an interpreter for a doctor and a tour guide. He is stuck in a dysfunctional relationship after the doctor could not prevent the death of his child. One day he is assign the Dass, a young, irresponsible, and equally dysfunctional couple with n othing that holds them together except three children. Mr. Kapasi is made aware of this very early on in the story, with the Dass allowing their children to do whatever they motivation. Midway through the trip, Mr. Kapasi tells them about his job as an interpreter. Mrs. Das takes a sudden interest in Mr. Kapasi that she did not display with her husband or kids, saying that his job seems so romantic (50). Mr. Kapasi becomes deeply enamored with Mrs. Das, feeling that her interest means that she loves him. He spends the rest of the story fantasizing about how their friendship would bloom, and distressful about leaving Mrs. Das or losing her interest. In order to spend more time with the family, he takes the family to the Sun Temple. Once there Mrs. Das remain in the car with Mr. Kapasi, where Mrs. Das confesses her failing relationship, her inability to get her stress off her chest, her affair, and that her youngest is not actually Mr. Dass. She asks Mr. Kapasi for a cure to make h er feel correct and make the pain go away, but Mr. Kapasi asks her, Is it really pain you feel or is it guilt? (66). She becomes angered by this and storms off to her family, where she finds that her son has been beaten by the monkeys for his food. The story ends with Mrs. Das kneeling down to take care of her child as the penning with the address of Mr. Kapasi (that she was going to use to mail him) flutters out of her bag.Lahiri brings these two dysfunctional relationships together to display the different types of neglect neglecting another and neglecting ones self. Through these two different types of neglect, she shows that without neglect a relationship is much more functional. In the very beginning Mr. Kapasi realizes that Mr. and Mrs. Das were a bad match, just as he and his wife were the bickering, the indifference, the protracted silence (53). Although we see Mr. Kapasi care for and try to help his depression stricken wife, The countless other ways he tried to console hi s wife and to keep her from crying in her sleep, he knew that his wife had little regard for his career (53). Lahiri brings up the point that it only takes one to neglect and ruin a relationship. He began to understand that the reason he does not get along with his wife is because she neglects his feelings and help. The indifference for his job and the constant bickering is due to the wifes jealousy and self-centered thinking, she resented the other lives he helped (53). This is why Mr. Kapasi is love-stricken by Mrs. Das, When Mr. Kapasi theme once again about how she had said, romantic, the feeling of intoxication grew, because she seems to respect him and seems to makes him feel like his job is actually something worthwhile (53). The bickering, indifference, and silence was non-existent she seemed genuinely interested in him. He feels like she realizes his troubles and does not neglect them like his wife does, therefore his affection grew. Due to the fact that his wife neglects his needs for respect, he looks for a new relationship elsewhere. However in the same story, Lahiri reveals the other side of the spectrum how neglecting ones self can tear apart a relationship. Mrs. Das reveals her unwillingness to reach out and search for an outlet or a friend, when she tells Mr. Kapasi that she did not make many close friends. There was no one to confide in about her husband at the end of a difficult day, or share a passing thought or worry (63). Simply put, she neglected her own needs. Instead of going to the trouble of finding someone to fill this need, she decided to cheat. She felt the ability to relieve herself of some of her stress, but this is ultimately unsatisfactory. In her continuing effort to relieve stress, she tells Mr. Kapasi some of her stories and secrets. It is only after the talk with Mr. Kapasi, she realizes that she is neglecting her own needs and neglecting the needs of her family, When she whipped out the hair-brush, the slip of paper with Mr. Kapasis address on it fluttered away in the wind (69). She realizes that she needs a loving family and he children need her. She stops neglecting her children by the act of brushing the hair of her beaten boy. It is clear that the communication had been rekindled between her and her family from there. The paper fluttering away represents that Mr. Kapasi will be unneeded as an outlet for communication because now she has her family. She is no longer oblivious to the fact that she needs her family as an outlet. Mrs. Das realizes that due to her neglecting herself she is neglecting her family, and therefore chooses to fix her problem of communication by reviving the relationship with her family. In these three stories by Lahiri, failure of communication is caused by neglect. This is demonstrated by either one or both of the characters in the relationship acting oblivious to the other persons needs and/or is self-centered comely to not care. Oblivious neglect is the inability to rec ognize the needs of another and self-centered neglect is when one is unwilling to help or recognize these needs. The communication between Shukumar and Shoba breaks down due to their inability and unwillingness to help themselves or each other. The relationship between Lilia and Mr. Pirzada fails due to Lilias obliviousness to the effects of her self-centered want for independence from Mr. Pirzada and her family. The failure between Mrs. Das and her family was caused by her obliviousness to her own need for an outlet of stress, while Mr. Kapasi failing relationship is due to his wifes selfishness and unwillingness to let Mr. Kapasi help her. Each of these relationships is different, yet the common thread is communication, or the lack thereof.
